National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) have decided to increase the fines over traffic violations by 200%. According to details, the motorway police will implement new fines from October 1, 2023 and currently running an awareness campaign on different platforms including social media.
New Fines on Motorway & Highways
A statement by NHMP have mentioned the new rules and rates of traffic fines:
- The police have included seven new rules in traffic rules across the country.
- Fine on over speeding have been increased to Rs. 2500 from previous Rs. 750.
- The new fine on wrong overtake will be Rs. 1500 instead of previous Rs. 300.
- Vehicles with broken and non-function headlights will be fined Rs. 5,000 compared to old challan of Rs. 500.
- The revised rate of challan for rash and careless driving is Rs. 1500 instead of Rs. 300.
- Driving without license will cause fine worth Rs. 5,000 compared to previous rate of Rs. 750.
- Fine on fancy number plates is going to be Rs. 1,000 and HID lights will be Rs. 2,000.
- The individual driving a car without registration will have to pay Rs. 2,000 as a fine compared to Rs. 500 previously.
The decision to revise fine rates was taken during a meeting of NHMP as authorities discuss the options to reduce traffic violations on the roads.
Toll Tax Increase
Last month, the toll tax on Lahore-Islamabad (M2) motorway was increased by 10% under a 20-year agreement between the National Highway Authority (NHA) and MS/More, a subsidiary of the Frontier Works Organization (FWO). The NHA signed the deal in 2014 to execute “overlay 86 modernization of Lahore-Islamabad Motorway (M2)” on a Build Operate Transfer (BOT) Basis.
According to the Concessions Agreement, the following annual toll increase is applicable during this phase:
- A 10 yearly toll % increase will be applied from the 2nd operational year till 2026
- A 7% annual toll increase will be applicable from 2026 to 2034.
